I have a friend who always said, “I’d love to live in a haunted three story Victorian house.”
As the saying goes, “Be careful what you wish for.”
No, she didn’t get her three story Victorian, but she did encounter an aggressive ghost.
She was sitting in her living room at a table she set up for making wind chimes. She was surprised that every time she set out a new wind chime, someone knocked on her door and asked to buy it. Thus, the beginning of a new business for her. But I digress.
She saw what she believed to be a shadow person out of the corner of her eye. It seemed to scurry across the room and through the wall. It was too tall for a mouse, but it was the same type of movement.
She shrugged it off and continued working. She heard the wind chimes on her porch. The sound started out slow and soft, like a gentle breeze. It was a comforting sound, but she noticed the room was getting cold — not just cold, but freezing.
The wind chimes were getting into a steady motion, but it seemed somewhat controlled, as though someone was playing a tune. It seemed familiar, but she couldn’t place the melody.
Next, she heard singing in another room. Since she was home alone, she got up to investigate. She found no one.
She settled back to her wind chime project when she heard a crash. She had experienced that before and upon investigation found nothing, so she ignored it. The wind chimes on the porch continued to play a tune. For anyone else the tune would be comforting, but for Anne, it was a song her ex-husband always sang. She felt chilled to the bone. Her ex had been dead for two decades.
Obviously, something was trying to get her attention.
She went out to her front porch to have a look around. Her dogs were watching something, but didn’t bark and didn’t acknowledge her. She was starting to go down the steps when she was pushed and reached the bottom sooner than expected. Sitting at the bottom of the steps, she took inventory and started to get up, only to be pushed down again.
She knew it wasn’t the ghost of her ex-husband, he wasn’t a violent man.
She shouted, “Leave me alone!”
This must have broken the spell the dogs seemed to be under. They started barking, came up to her with tails wagging. When she was pushed again, the dogs were snarling and snapping at something. The dogs chased the entity, but it disappeared in the house.
Anne didn’t like the idea of the entity being in the house unattended, but she also realized she had no control over ghosts — friendly or aggressive — and this one was decidedly aggressive.
She heard a crash. This time she decided to investigate.
The old grandfather clock that sat in the foray for years had been knocked over. Glass was scattered on the floor, but the strangest thing was that clock parts were scattered among the glass, too. All the mechanisms had been dismantled. All those little cogs and gears were on the floor intermingled with the glass. The wood had splintered in the clock casing.
Fighting back tears, she got a broom and dust pan to clean up the mess. As she worked, she thought she’d keep some of the clock works to add to her wind chime materials.
Deep in thought, she couldn’t explain how a splintered piece of wood pierced her thigh. It hurt like the dickens. She didn’t know whether to try to take it out or leave it in. Blood soaked through her jeans and began to puddle on the floor. This wasn’t good. She was feeling faint, but managed to get to the telephone and call 9-1-1.
She doesn’t remember the paramedics arriving. She didn’t realize she had been in the hospital for three days. Everything seemed foggy around her. She wasn’t sure if she was alive or not.
A few more days later, she awoke.
A nurse greeted her and said she’d get the doctor. Anne tried to put the pieces together to what exactly brought her to the hospital.
When the doctor came into her room, he went over his chart and explained all the medical mumbo jumbo. Instead of leaving, he pulled up a chair and sat down.
Should she tell the doctor a ghost was messing with her — playing with the wind chimes, pushing her down the porch steps, knocking her down every time she tried to get up, knocked over her grandfather clock and stabbed her with a splintered piece of wood?
As it turned out, the doctor spoke of all those things. Evidently, while in her coma she was trying to figure out what happened. It was fortunate the doctor believed in the paranormal and didn’t discount the situation.
The splintered piece of wood did not have a sharp point, it was dull and rammed through her thigh with such force, it almost broke through to the other side.
Anne couldn’t imagine anyone living or dead who would be that strong and that filled with hate for her, but that splintered piece of wood was evidence that someone or something did hate her that much.
Anne is still seeking answers and is still living in her house. Her reasoning is that moving wouldn’t prevent this aggressive ghost from finding her. She has had other incidents from time to time, but nothing as drastic as this personal experience.
That’s a truly creepy real ghost story!

Demonic Entities love causing problems.
Ryan and Liz didn’t know what was going on with them. It seemed little things would set them off.
For their wedding anniversary they decided to get away and work on their marriage.
When they reurned home, Liz noticed the silver candle holders they received as a wedding present were missing. Ryan noticed the bracelet he made for Liz was missing. Instead of getting upset, they decided to sit down and discuss the situation logically without emotion.
When did all of this begin?
Ryan and Liz sat down and thought about when they moved in. They also went over the wedding gifts they received. They also listed the furniture they bought or was given to them. They were narrowing down when they started arguing about petty things. They knew something was in the house that wanted them to argue.
Ryan knew that demonic entities feed off discord and can cause it. Liz was aware that demons can be in objects as well as houses.
Finally they narrowed it down to a dresser they found in the basement and were using it in their bedroom. They emptied it and instead of returning it to the basement, they set it outside to the curb. They also removed other items left by the previous owners. Liz was quite fond of the hutch where she placed their fine china and crystal stemware, but she knew it had to go.
Liz cleaned the basement from top to bottom. She said a prayer and demanded that any evil leave in the name of Jesus Christ.
They felt confident when they went to bed that evening.
Around midnight they heard loud banging on the front door.
Turning on the porch light, they saw that the furniture they put to the curb was on the porch. Was the furniture trying to get back in the house?
As strange as it sounds, that’s exactly what they believed was happening. They didn’t have a sage smudge stick. They did have a rosemary herb candle that they lit and did their own ritual of blessing their house and demanding that all evil leave their doorway.
The banging grew louder and more insistent. They continued praying.
By day break, the pounding stopped.
Liz and Ryan were exhausted. They slept for a few hours before Ryan called his brother to help him take the furniture to the dump. Or to take it out to be burned.
They were awakened by loud banging on the door.
Oh no, not again they thought.
When they looked out, it was a young couple who wanted to know about the furniture on their porch.
Liz and Ryan were hesitant about allow the young couple to take the furniture away, but it would solve their problem.
Liz did try to explain that they should smudge the furniture before putting it in their house, but they were told they didn’t believe in that mumbo jumbo superstitious nonsense.
With the furniture gone, Liz and Ryan did have their house blessed. The said a prayer for the young couple who took the furniture.
Everything has been calm and peaceful in their home.
A few years later I saw a beat up old truck with antique furniture stuck at the side of the road.
The couple sitting on the hood of the truck looked bruised and battered with scratches on their arms, legs and face. Being the curious person that I am, I stopped to ask if they needed help. They waved me away saying, “You don’t want any of our bad mojo.”
They were right, I didn’t need their bad mojo, but I had to know if they were the young couple that took Liz and Ryan’s furniture.
While we were talking, a man stopped and asked what they were planning to do with the furniture. He seemed interested and gave them an offer they immediately accepted.
Once the furniture was removed from the old battered truck, it started right up. I met the couple at my favorite coffee shop to hear their story.
Yes, they did find the furniture on someone’s porch. They were hesitant to confide in me that the furniture was possessed and demons attacked them while they slept. Their life was one problem after another since they took that furniture. The pipes burst in their apartment and they had to move. They were both having problems with their jobs. Their friends and family abandoned them. Bad things happened to people around them. They were given the reputation of being jinxed.
Having sold the furniture to the man on the side of road, I wondered if they felt anything about not warning the guy about the furniture.
All I can say is “Buyer Beware.”

During this Halloween week, I thought a real ghost story would be in order.
On this fall evening, I had a few friends over. We were sitting around the fire pit near my patio.
As is usually the case, we started talking about urban legends. I’ve always thought some truth originated from them, but the location is usually never pin pointed and some have been proven false, but retold nevertheless.
Someone mentioned the urban legend “The Babysitter.” I always get a creepy feeling about that story, but I didn’t expect my friend Barbara’s reaction.
“That really happened to me,” Barbara said quietly.
We waited. I was torn between wanting to know and not wanting to hear a story that would keep me up until the break of dawn. Especially an urban legend I already found disturbing. I didn’t need to put a real person’s face on it.
“It’s not exactly like the urban legend, but the similarity cannot be mistaken,” she began. “I was at my aunt and uncle’s house staying with my younger cousins. My parents were having an anniversary party for them. My brothers had dates and that left me to stay with the cousins.”
She quickly added, “No one was killed.” And, the only similarity to the urban legend is the babysitting part … but I’m sure there are numerous variations.
I just knew it had to do with telephone calls or creepy sounds upstairs or in the basement. I had to shut off my wandering imagination.
Barbara’s story took place in the mid 1960’s.
“We were all downstairs. Aunt Harriet had dinner prepared for us. June and I just had to put it on plates. Brady and Mark were watching an old western on television. They wanted to continue watching their program and set up TV trays for all of us to eat together in the living room. During the commercial, the boys got a cold bottle of soda for each of us and made a big production of popping off the caps. They carried in their plates and the sodas just as the program began. June and I followed with silverware, napkins and our own plates.”
“I remember just getting settled when the telephone rang.”
No one was there, but the phone line seemed to crackle.
Barbara returned to the living room and began eating when the telephone rang again. She got up to answer it. This time there was laughing on the line. She decided it was a prank call and said, “Tell me the joke and I’ll laugh along with you.” She heard a distinct click indicating the call was disconnected.
“During the commercial break, we refilled our plates in the kitchen, grabbed another roll or two and the boys opened up another bottle of soda for each of us.”
They were having a pleasant evening together, it was like they were having their own “party” in front of the television.
After dinner and after the television program, the boys searched for something else to watch while June and Barbara washed the dishes. The boys later put the soda bottles in the garage and took out the trash.
They rushed in white as ghosts. “Upstairs, we saw someone in Mom’s sewing room.”
June didn’t believe them at first. She knew her brothers were probably up to something. Barbara immediately believed them. She went outside and the sewing room window was dark.
The boys insisted the light was on and there was someone in the room, walking by the window.
“Let’s all go out for ice cream,” Barbara suggested.
They all got into her car, parked out front. June noticed the light on in the front bedroom window.
“That’s my room!” she said. “I didn’t have my light on.”
They watched the window. Nothing crossed in front of it, but the next window lit up. They were sure someone was in the house.
Barbara carefully drove to the store. She found a telephone booth and all four of them crammed inside as Barbara called her house. Her father answered. She told him what was happening and she and her cousins were at the grocery store. He told her to come home with her cousins.
She had to pass the house on her way home and saw her uncle’s car parked across the street. She parked behind him. He was relieved they were safe and said he was waiting for the police.
A couple of police cars pulled up and parked a couple of houses away on the same side of the street as her aunt and uncle’s house. Her uncle got out of the car to join them.
The police went inside. When they stepped on the porch, the porch light went out. Two other officers went around back.
Barbara remembered leaving the kitchen light on when they left. It was now out.
The police went inside and through every room in the house. What they found was disturbing.
Uncle Roy told Barbara to go home with her cousins.
“Daddy’s going into the house,” Brady said.
“What’s in the house,” Mark wanted to know.
That’s what everyone wanted to know. They waited for Uncle Roy.
He returned with the police. Neither Uncle Roy, nor the police gave much information, but they asked plenty of questions from what they did that evening to what they had for dinner. Barbara explained about the telephone calls. The boys spoke about the light being on in the sewing room.
Aunt Harriet remembered checking the bedrooms before she and Roy left for the evening after Barbara arrived. Nothing was out of place she insisted.
Barbara could attest to the fact that no one went upstairs. The bathroom downstairs was used. All the children were in agreement. Either the boys were together or June and Barbara were together when they were all in the living room.
They didn’t hear anything upstairs.
Years later Barbara found out what the police found and why her aunt and uncle moved out of the house.
No windows were found open. All the outside doors were locked, but something strange had entered the house or been in the house when Harriet and Roy left the children in the care of Barbara.
It was strange no one heard anything, but the television was on and they were watching a western with galloping hoofs and gun fire.
Upstairs was a complete mess. Toys were thrown around the room, beds were set upended against the wall, some toys were broken and all the heads of June’s dolls were gone — not in the trash or anywhere in the house. Clothes were ripped, not slashed with a knife while still on their hangers. Drawers were dumped out and the contents ripped up.
This was impossible for Barbara and her cousins to have done during the two to three hours they were alone in the house.
It was concluded that it had to be poltergeists.
Harriet and Roy didn’t return to live in the house with their children. They hired someone to clean the house and remove all the furniture to the dump. They stayed with Barbara’s family for a couple of weeks before moving into an apartment while they were selling the house.
Whatever was in the house may not have wanted to harm Barbara and her cousins, but since Harriet and Roy were away, it made it very clear that it didn’t want them in the house.
Barbara has never forgotten that night and still gets chills remembering the laughter she heard over the telephone.
Did you find that real ghost story creepy?

I have been communicating with spirits by using candles.
It started years ago when I was young and living at home with my parents. We had a power outage and my mother lit some candles so we wouldn’t be sitting in the dark. My father took a flashlight out in the garage to find an old lantern or two.
While he was setting up the lanterns, he spoke of how on the ranch they used these lanterns regularly. The power was always going out on windy or rainy days. He also said that there were spirits around us all the time. If we wanted to communicate with them all we had to do was ask a yes or no question. He started out by asking, “Is anyone here? To answer yes, make the flame grow brighter.”
We waited and watched. The lantern grew brighter and the flame of the candle on the coffee table got higher.
“Is there more than one spirit here?” he asked.
Both flames grew higher.
“Will you answer some questions for us?”
Both flames grew higher.
We had a discussion about our next question. We wanted to know how many spirits were in the room with us. So we started with numbers. Then we wanted to know who was here. Was it a relative or someone who lived in the house or on the property before the current house was built.
This particular night, there were two spirits — a man and wife. They were not relatives so we had to guess a lot of names. We resorted to the alphabet to narrow down the names for the man and his wife. They were Isabelle and Jacob. They didn’t live in the house or on the property, they had an accident on the property and died there.
This was enough for my mother. She didn’t want to communicate any more with Isabelle and Jacob. She did say, “I’m sorry what happened to you, but please leave now.”
My brother asked after a few minutes, “Is anyone there?”
The flames stayed steady, but we could hear whispering of two women. We weren’t sure if Isabelle was still around or if she left with Jacob or if some other spirits came to join our little communication session.
I think my mother was more unnerved by the situation than the rest of us. She brought out a battery operated radio and turned it on. She was trying to drown out the whispering we heard earlier.
It was the eeriest sound … then the front door opened and all the cupboards in the kitchen opened about the same time. We all sat still with our eyes as big as saucers.
My father got up to investigate. No one was at the front door. He closed all the cupboards in the kitchen, but he did decide to get out some plates and glasses and set them on the kitchen table. He thought some milk and cake would be appropriate to have to settle our nerves.
My mother moved the candle to the table. My father already set the lantern in the kitchen.
We were just finishing up our cake and milk when there was a loud knock on the front door.
“I wonder if it’s Jacob and Isabelle?” my brother whispered to me.
My father went to answer the door and I was right behind him.
There was a man carrying a lantern. He said, “I’m just checking to see if you folks are all right.”
“We’re fine,” my father answered. He waited for more information before asking, “Do you know how long the power is going to be out?”
“We’re working on it, but it may take a few hours.”
My father thanked him for the information and closed and locked the door.
We had no sooner relocated to the living room when the lights came on.
At school the next day everyone was talking about the power outage.
I wasn’t going to volunteer about our ghostly communication and the events of the evening, but Larry wasn’t inhibited at all.
He spoke about how he and his siblings used the candle to communicate with spirits. He told of the ghost of his grandfather who came to visit.
This gave Rosemary courage to speak of the events that happened in her house. She said that they lit candles, but didn’t ask questions, but did watch the flame. They heard footsteps walking in the hallway, opening doors to all the bedrooms and opening closets. She and her siblings knew from the sound on the hardwood floors exactly where the spirit was. Later, when they had to go to bed, Rosemary noticed that her dolls were moved and the clothes hanging in the closet were all moved to one side.
I still didn’t share my experience. I was relieved I didn’t have an actual ghost walking around and moving things.
Years later I asked my father about that incident. He remembered it clearly. He admitted that the man who came to the door seemed odd.
“Do you think it was Jacob?” I asked. I had always wondered if he was looking for help after his accident with Isabelle.
My father just said he wouldn’t have been surprised. Or it could have been another spirit. The house was on a hill and there were lots of accidents that happened years ago on that road.
Communicating with candles is not the easiest thing to do. That’s why many people use Ouija or Spirit Boards. It seems the Ouija Boards have been receiving negative comments so people have resorted to Spirit Boards. Perhaps communication with any spirits is frowned on by many regardless of the form.
I don’t use Ouija or Spirit Boards, but I do use candles. I usually don’t have the patience to communicate for a long time, unless the information I receive is interesting, but it usually isn’t. Spirits like to let me know they are here, but they don’t seem to have anything else to communicate.
Now, we have Spirit Boxes to help us communicate with spirits. It isn’t always easy, but some spirits do come through clearly if they have something important to communicate.
It is important to record your sessions with the spirit box so you can replay it over and over again. Some EVPs are difficult to understand while others are quite clear.
And, with Halloween coming around, it may be good to gather some friends around and do a spirit box session or two.
From some recent YouTube Videos I’ve watched, it seems October is an excellent month to go ghost hunting … but don’t do it alone … have a group of friends with you — and no horse play. This is serious business and you need to have people around you who take it seriously as well.
Just this afternoon I heard voices when I took my barrels out to the curb. No one was around, but I did hear talking . . . It could have been neighbors in their back yards, but it didn’t sound like the echo from neighboring yards … It was creepy.
I just know we’re not alone … there are spirits all around … all of the time …
Thanks for stopping by!!

I don’t use a Ouija board or have one in my home.
I believe they are a portal to trouble. There are many who agree with me and, of course, there are those who do not. It’s fine to have your own beliefs. Just as we’ve all had our own experiences.
And, since it is getting close to Halloween, there will be many having parties and a Ouija Board or two will make an appearance … Or it will be hush-hush and some will be invited to “play” after the party.
Whatever you believe, as I said earlier is your business …
As you can see from the vintage advertisement, Ouija boards have been around for a long time. It was introduced as a parlor game, as merely an item to amuse your guests.
Over the years the Ouija board has been sold in toy stores and occult stores. You can buy them on-line or find them just about everywhere. I’ve seen them in trash barrels and also pitched outside. I don’t know if someone had a bad experience or they thought it would be funny to have a Ouija board cast out on their front lawn — maybe to see if anyone would take it home.
And, there have been those who make their own to use . . . I’ve seen them made from pizza boxes and strips of paper . . . shot glasses have been used as the planchette.
But … we must now get to our real ghost story …
Lyle loaned his Ouija Board to a Goth Group from 2009 to 2017.
When it was returned to him, he believed it was haunted with a variety of spirits. He first recalled hearing noises: knockings, bells, chimes, scratching, cards being shuffled, nibbling — as a rat chewing on paper, coins being dropped and growls. He also noticed items disappearing and then reappearing in places where he had previously searched.
He left it on his coffee table since its return and a neighbor reported hearing loud poundings, screams and what she believed was a heavy metal band rehearsing. There were guitar riffs that were repeated over and over again and drum rolls.
Over time Lyle could feel the presence of someone watching him while he was in bed. He thought it was an old man wearing a hood and by his side as an old woman, also hooded. He also heard what sounded like a chorus of children singing nursery rhymes, but they weren’t any nursery rhymes he remembered. He found the Ouija board would move around and set itself up in other locations. He started experiencing headaches and weakness which made him tired all of the time.
Lyle eventually threw the Ouija board out in the trash . . . only to have it set up again in his house.
This made the activity escalate. He would find large blood splotches on the Ouija board. He could feel cold spots in various places around the board. He also thought he saw an ectoplasmic mist coming out of it. He was becoming frightened to have it in his home, but also felt as though he couldn’t get rid of it.
Lyle never used it, even when he first acquired it. He bought it and loaned it to friends. His original idea was to have it out as a conversation piece. But now, his friends avoided him. They didn’t visit him — nor was he invited to their homes. When he’d see friends at a local bar, restaurant or around town they moved away from him. Even when he’d call out to them, they wouldn’t aciknowledge him, but walk swiftly away. Some old friends told him to leave them alone.
He was so disgusted with how this Ouija board ruined his life that he burned it. He thought the ashes wouldn’t be able to put themselves back together.
Everything was going well for a few days until his nephew brought him a Ouija board.

Well, it is finally raining with the thunder rumbling in the background to make a wonderful background for my writing this Real Ghost Story about a creepy Friday Night Scare!!
This happened a few years ago, but it was a personal experience I’ll not soon forget.
I don’t like creepy experiences in or around my home . . . but it is what it is and I’m accepting it . . . but it doesn’t mean I have to like it 🙂
It was a Friday night the people who lived behind me were having a party with a live band.
It was loud, but I waited until after 10 PM before calling the police to have them quiet down. It was the strangest thing. I could see dark hooded entities hovering over the hedge that separated our yards. Plus there’s also a fence behind my hedge. One would think the hedge would cut down the noise, but I suppose it is just adding more privacy.
There were six hooded entities that hovered over the hedge as I was calling the nonemergency number for the police department. After my call, there were five still hovering. I did wonder what happened to the sixth one. I did notice they each carried something shiny — it may have been a knife. I just know it gave me an uneasy feeling.
I don’t know if it was the music or what this celebration was all about that my neighbors were holding. I just know that I didn’t like what was hovering over my hedge and I was beginning to not appreciate the neighbors who lived behind me.
I felt like I was playing out the Agatha Christy Ten Little Indians theme . . . then there were none. The cloaked entities disappeared as time passed. I do have protection all around my house and within, but for some reason I was feeling uncomfortable with these entitles. I was thinking it was better seeing them than not seeing them.
I lit some candles on my patio and I got out my smudge stick and waved it around my yard with my prayers. Just because these entities were hooded, didn’t necessarily mean they were evil. It does make me wonder why they would be hooded and not showing themselves.
As I said earlier, it bothered me that they did disappear. Wasn’t that the idea? I felt like they were spying on me. It made me wonder if it’s better to see what you really don’t want to see than not see them at all. Kind of a weird concept, actually.
Eventually, the band turned down their amps and the party continued, but much quieter.
I sat on my patio, enjoying the evening. I didn’t see anything hovering in my yard. It seemed calm and peaceful. I could hear talking, but wasn’t paying much attention to it.
Then there was screaming in the yard behind me. I also heard banging, crashes and more screams. There was a lot of noise, running feet and yelling from fear.
Evidently, neighbors on both sides and maybe beyond were concerned and the police were called again.
One neighbor told me that knives were being thrown and several were thrown in his yard. He didn’t appreciate it and called the police. Then he remarked about all the other noises and the screaming. The police came and the fire department with ambulances. It turned out to be a scene from some horror movie.
An elderly man rented the house with his grandson. It was his grandson’s birthday. The grandfather hired the band and caterers. It was a party that went south very quickly. Some neighbors asked them to turn down the music, but they didn’t. The old man tried to reason with them, but they locked him in his room.
By midnight, the party was out of hand and the kitchen was set on fire. Things were flying around the house. Many of the guests were hurt and running for their lives.
The house was a complete mess as was the yard.
The owners of the house came to access the damage. It was the talk of the neighborhood all weekend. The theme that was running through all the stories was that something was trying to kill them. The door to the grandfather’s room was splintered from the outside. All the metal handles and doorknobs were bent beyond recognition. All the doors and cupboard doors were barely hanging on their hinges. Windows were broken and food was thrown on the walls and the floor. Some knives were sticking out of the wall.
Was it the six entities I saw hovering over my hedge?
Did the music invite these entities or was it something else?
This is one of those experiences that doesn’t seem to have an explanation. None of the party participants shared what they were doing — if it was something to do with the paranormal. I know nothing about the band or the caterers. Nor the neighbors for that matter.
The grandfather is living with his son. The grandson was hospitalized with injuries from all the flying debris.
Even years later, this is a story shared in hushed tones. And, no one wants to believe it had anything to do with the paranormal . . . but I know better . . . even though the neighbors behind me don’t want to know.
The house behind me is still empty . . . or is it?
I haven’t seen the hooded figures . . . maybe they moved on with the band, the caterers or maybe the grandson . . . They could be in the house, but haven’t come outside beyond my fense and hedge. I do keep my distance . . . except when I walk around the block . . . but I’ve found I do walk swiftly by it . . . I keep my head down and look straight ahead. It does give off a negative vib . . .
I do thank you for stopping by and hope you’ll tell a friend or two about this website.
